The Close Guantánamo NOW
Campus/Community Speaking Tour January 9-17
If, as Obama says, "the war on terror" is winding down, why will this government not
close Guantánamo? Five years after Obama's first promise to close Guantánamo,
it remains open. Now the prisoners are so desperate, they would rather starve
themselves on a hunger strike than "live" in the torture of
indefinite detention. What is our responsibility to see that this immoral
prison closes once and for all?
With expert testimony from UK journalist Andy Worthington and challenging analysis from Debra Sweet, director
of World Can't Wait, the tour will begin in New York City and go to Washington DC to join in protests at the White House
demanding the immediate closure of Guantánamo. From there it will go on
to the San Francisco Bay Area and southern California. The tour will hit key college
campuses, reaching law students and a whole generation of young people who have
never heard the stories of the Guantánamo prisoners.
As the Guantánamo Bay prison enters its 13th year, 76 prisoners who were cleared for release years ago are still
unjustly imprisoned. Prisoners have gone on hunger strike to protest
their conditions, drawing international attention to the outrage of Guantánamo.
The U.S. military has now declared that it will not release any information to the media
or the public about the prisoners on hunger strike.

about them. Author of The Guantanamo Files; Stories of the 774 Men Held
at Guantanamo, and co- director of the film Outside the Law: Stories from
Guantanamo, he further developed our knowledge of the treatment of the
prisoners by studying the Guantanamo Detainee Briefs released by WikiLeaks in
2011, courtesy of Private Manning. Follow him @GuantanamoAndy.

“Close Guantanamo NOW.” Follow Debra on twitter @DSweetWCW
